DJ Scratching Techniques - Some of the Basic DJ Scratching Techniques

In this article we will touch on the subject of DJ scratching techniques. Scratching is one of
the those skills that really catches peoples attention when they go to watch a DJ perform on
stage! The sound the record makes when the DJ puts the needle on the record and starts to
manipulate it is just awesome and it really gets the crowd going! There are multiple
techniques that the DJ can use to create sounds of cool sounds. Lets talk about some of the
basic ones..
1 The scribble scratch Technique.
This is one of my favorite scratch techniques as I really enjoy the sound it makes. What you
need to do is use your preferred index and middle finger combined and push the record forward
and back ever so slightly to scratch over the record. Its almost like having your arm go into
quick spasm if you get me. Its very quick movement on your part pushing the record backwards
and forwards.
2. Chirp scratch technique
Yet again, this is another great sounding scratch. Its probably one of the easiest scratches
to learn. What you need to have as far as equipment goes, is two turntables (Decks) and a
scratch mixer and a battle record. You then simply Start with the cross fader open and the
beginning of the sound on the record. What you need to do is push the record with your finger
tips and simultaneously close the fader. Then open the cross fader and then pull back the
record. Then you just keep with the rotation of that. Start off slow and work your way up to
a faster pace.
3. Stab scratch technique
Having the same equipment as used before in the example above, this time you need to start
out with the beginning of the sound on the record with the cross fader closed so you can't
hear anything on the right hand turn turntable. What you do next is, push forward and open
the fader into the middle while at the same time pushing the left record on the left hand
turntable. As you push the record and make the sound you need to push the fader back so you
can pull back the record and start from the beginning. Try this with some practice and you
should be ok to go good!

Why Virtual DJing is Becoming So Popular

As you may know from a couple of my previous articles I am not a big fan of mobile Djing, but I have done it before on more than one occasion. And to be honest with you I find that using laptops and virtual DJ software is the best way to go with mobile DJing. Most mobile jocks nowadays are now starting to use this type of format. I think the fact that not having to transport bulky equipment, CDS and vinyl's everywhere is making more and more DJs change over.
Also most pubs and venue's have sound systems already in place so it is just a case of hooking up a aux cable to your laptop and you are good to go. In my personal opinion I would recommend taking one CD deck and a couple of CDs just in case of any errors with your computer. But I suppose that depends on how confident you are with the durability of it.
One of my favourite reasons for using this format of Djing is you can pre-set your mixes, and just play them when you get to the gig, you dont have to mess around cueing up songs and mixing them just press play and let the virtual DJ software do the work for you. Which then leaves you with more time to interact with the crowd and entertain the party.
You can even slip of for a quick pint or go the toilet without fear of your track finishing.

Getting started with DJing can become a very expensive and confusing process. There is so many different makes and formats of turntables that the whole thing can become quite overwhelming.
The first thing I would recommend is that if you have never used any turntables before or done any type of DJing try and find somewhere were you can have a little play around on them and get a feel for the whole thing first. I'm pretty sure the guys in your local record store will be more than helpful.
DJing can become a very expensive past time so you do really need to be 100 % sure its something you want to take up. Having a great love for music is a must so if you don't eat sleep and breathe music then don't bother you will only be wasting your time and money.
Choosing the right set of decks is crucial if your serious about taking up DJing its defiantly worth while investing in a good set of turntables like technics or Vestax, there is an awful lot of cheaper models but they just don't perform half as good. Technics and Vestax turntables can cost anything from £400 upwards for one turntable.
So they can become to expensive depending on your budget, if you can not afford to invest the money for Technics or Vestax, other models such as Nu mark have very good starter packages for under £300 which usually consist of two decks and a mixer, what ever set of turntables you decide to purchase try and only buy a set with direct drive motors as they work a lot better then belt driven decks.

DJing - Finding the Cue

The first thing you need to do is set up your mixer. Put the channel faders for both inputs (CD or Vinyl) to full, and the cross fader to the middle. Set the gain controls and EQ controls on both channels to the same setting too.
Whether you use vinyl, CD or MP3 - the most important thing you can do is find an exact cue point. In most instance, this cue point will be a bass drum - and it'll probably be either the very first bass beat of the entire tune, or it'll be the first beat of a phrase in the intro. (Check out the Better Mixing page for information on Phrases etc).
With vinyl, assuming it's the very first beat of the tune, this is simple enough. Just put the needle on the record at the very beginning, press play, and when you hear the first bass beat, stop the record, and wind it back - until you hear silence. Then wind it forward a tiny amount, until you can hear the bass beat begin to play. Press stop, and leave the needle there. You now have the needle cued at the very first bass beat
CD's are just as simple. Pop in the CD and press play. It's going back to the very beginning of the bass beat that's harder. If you have something like the CDJ1000's, you can just wind the platter back in exactly the same way as you would with a turntable. When you hear the bass beat, and you know you're at the beginning, press CUE to store it. (Most other models of CD deck will probably need you to press PLAY to set the cue).
If however, you're using a CD deck that doesn't have vinyl emulation (like the CDJ1000's) and when you pause the tune, it just repeats that same frame of music over and over, use the controls on your CD deck which let you skip back frame by frame (you'll either have dedicated controls, or just press the search buttons quickly in succession to do this) and wait for the juddering, broken CD sound to stop. Skip forward one more frame to make sure you're right at the beginning of the bass beat - and then store the Cue point (either by pressing CUE, or PLAY - check your manual).
