DJ Jobs - Top 5 Tips

DJ Jobs - Top 5 Tips

If you're having trouble finding DJ jobs, you're not alone. Many club DJs are having a tough time in today's economy. Less people are going to clubs, so the owners try to cut costs. DJ job compensation is one of the first things to go.

As a professional club DJ with 10 years of experience, I can give you a few tips to improve your DJ job prospects:
  1. Create a New Demo CD. Spend time on programming, and getting the mix done right. Finish it off with a slick promotional package. You need to stand out from all the other DJs, and a well made demo CD with good graphics can do it.
  2. Hit the Streets. You won't find gigs sitting on the couch. Bring your demo to every single club in your town. Do it during daytime work hours, when the manager will be working on business related things.
  3. Reduce your Fee. Some work is better than no work. The exposure you'll get from having a DJ gig when everyone else doesn't will help you in the long run. The more well known you are in an area, the more you can charge.
  4. Become a Promoter. Offer to throw your own events at small clubs. Get all your friends to come down to the shows. With more of the risk on you, club owners will be more willing to give you a shot.
  5. Embrace Social Media. Start accounts with the major three social media sites, Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace. Add new friends to these accounts on a regular basis, and update them with new music, parties, photos, and other content.
  6. Stay positive. I know it's a cliche, but positive thinking and attitudes go a long way. Stay friendly with your competition, and they may give you a heads up on a DJ job opening in the future.
