Item Title: Logic Pro Tutorial: Using Side Chain Compression - Tips & Tricks
Item Description:
More info - bit.ly In this tutorial, Dubspot Electronic Music Production and Sound Design Instructor Evan Sutton will demonstrate two techniques for sidechain compression in Logic Pro in the context of dance pop production. These techniques can be used in a number of different musical contexts, and can be even more handy when made part of a Logic template. The first technique will involve simple ducking of a bass in order to make room for a kick drum. When mixing, subtractive equalization is very important to make sure that there is room for all of the sounds, and that they're not clashing. With this technique, we can have sounds share a particular frequency range, while also creating some interesting rhythmic effects. The second technique uses an instance of Ultrabeat with the sequencer turned on, to create a ghost sidechain. In some cases, you may want to create a rhythmic ducking effect, even though there is no other instrument useful as a sidechain. That's where this trick comes in, and it's simple to build into templates. Ultrabeat's unique features make this one possible. Simple automation can create a transition between rhythmic ducking, and no ducking, so as to create a dynamic, evolving sound. These two compression techniques are grounded in principles that are portable to all DAWs and compressors, but Logic's unique interface, and features like Ultrabeat's sequencer make it perfect for use with alternate and unique routings.

Item Title: Ableton Live Tutorial: Intro to Warping + Slicing Audio - Thavius Beck
Item Description:
bit.ly What exactly is Warping and Slicing? One of the things that makes Ableton Live such a unique and powerful piece of software is a fundamental feature which completely changes how you are able to interact with your audio. This feature is called Warping. Warping allows you to manipulate the tempo and pitch of your audio independently of one another. This means that you can change the pitch of a song to fit the pitch of another without changing the tempos, or you can slow down or speed up a piece of audio without altering the pitch. As someone who came from using hardware samplers like the Akai S-900, Roland W-30, and even the MPC 1000, you can imagine just how mind-blowing a discovery this was for me at the time... when you learn how to effectively warp audio and apply it to your songs, every sample becomes a new piece of elastic to be stretched to your liking.

Item Title: DJ Spinna @ Dubspot - Interview: Talks DJing, Hip Hop, Electronic Dance Music +
Item Description:
more info - blog.dubspot.com DJ Spinna maintained a strong output in the underground independent hip hop scene of the late 1990s and early 2000s, but no doubt had many reasons for his move towards house and electronic dance music. For one, the over-saturation of the hip hop genre resulted in massive amount of mediocre records being created and released in the mainstream and the underground. Early this Summer, ahead of an appearance at Brooklyn Museum's First Saturday dance party and performance event, Dubspot caught up with the genre-defying, prolific producer and crowd-rocking, crate-digging DJ for an interview in which he discussed a wide array of topics from his philosophy on DJing (DJing is a performance and crowd engagement is paramount) and production (every record should have a purpose, channel a feeling, an emotion, and communicate something) to having a unique voice, not conforming to industry standards, particularly in terms of formulaic production standards, embracing different genres, and more. Spinna has produced and remixed records for artists such as Mos Def, De La Soul, Stevie Wonder.

Item Title: Sound Design w/ NI's Reaktor: Rolodecks (Twisted Tools) New Multi-FX VST + Maschine
Item Description:
More info - bit.ly One of the interesting things that I find in my travels working for Native Instruments, is that there seem to be a whole lot of people out there who don't really understand what Reaktor is. Reaktor tends to be the one instruments from NI that actually scares people because it looks so complex and sophisticated. Reaktor is a completely modular system that allows you to build virtually any digital audio device that you can imagine. At Dubspot, we teach our Sound Design & Synthesis students how to dive deep into Reaktor's guts to create their own custom synthesizers and gain a greater appreciation for modular synthesis.

Item Title: Tutorial: Mixing & Mastering w/ iZotope Ozone 4 - Using Multiband Compression
Item Description:
More info - bit.ly Dubspot Instructor and Mixing & Mastering engineer Daniel Wyatt is back with more invaluable techniques, tips and tricks using iZotope's versatile mastering plug-in Ozone 4. In this new tutorial video, Wyatt shares an amazing technique using Ozone's Multiband Compressor to gather up all the low end frequencies (foundational elements such as kick and bass) of your track and boosting them up and giving them compression pressure, while maintaining a dynamic of sounds. Daniel Wyatt starts by explaining the essential settings and parameters of the multiband dynamics section, and further shows you how to utilize some of the incredible features such as the real-time visualization dynamics and solo-ing of each band of the four bands, so you can compress, fine-tuned, and boost specific frequency range. Once again, Wyatt is using Ozone 4 mastering plug-in, but dynamic range compression is a universal mastering technique you can apply using any host application.

Item Title: NI's Komplete 8: Kontakt 5 + Maschine Tutorial - Filters, Effects, Timestretching +
Item Description:
Read more: bit.ly In this new tutorial, Dubspot instructor and Native Instruments product specialist Matt Cellitti shows off some of the incredible features in NI's brand-new Kontakt 5 which is of course included in the upcoming Komplete 8. Cellitti explains hat many of these features had remained unchanged since version 2, which came out several years ago, so they were due for a nice update and now sound better than ever! Some of the new features explored in this tutorial includes new filters, effects, time-stretching capabilities, and more. Many people look at Kontakt and just play the instrument presets provided without ever going "under the hood" and creating their own instruments. Kontakt is such a powerful sampler that you can use it for radical sound design and to re-invision loops via time-stretching and effect processing. I really like that Dubspot teaches these techniques in the Sound Design and Synthesis course so that the students can learn to harness the full power of this beast! I also wanted to show off the fantastic new Time Machine Pro feature while loading Kontakt as a plugin inside of Maschine. Tons of Maschine users really want timestretching in Maschine and now they have a valid option by using Kontakt 5. I stretched the Funky Drummer loop down about 15 BPM, while maintaining the original pitch, and then quickly and easily re-sampled it right into Maschine.
